The Resource Book provides useful and attractive games and puzzles which make the dyscalculic child think about mathematical concepts in a non-challenging way. My granddaughter enjoys it.

Jack Parsons was deeper than you think.

This amazing compendium of essays, by the most occult scientist of the American space program, is worth all the magickal force you'll spend to find it. Written briefly before his 'accidental' death the ideals, emotions and symbolism conveyed become a sword he builds into your mind. The darker side is there as well, from the man who adored the novel 'Darker Than You Think' and 'Moonchild'. Robert Anton Wilson describes Parsons as "...one of the greatest libertarian philosophers of the 20th century." A founder of JPL and memorialized with a crater in his name on the dark side of the moon, this rare book is the proverbial 'end of the rainbow'. Find it if you can, and forget what you might have heard, Jack Parsons is deeper than you think.

Jack Parsons is not merely talking about something, he has something to say about almost everything in life, and poses it from a deep perspective everyone can agree with. His words are hard to come by these days as the world today is all up in turmoil, he lets the dust settle and clears the path, or shows you how to find your own.

About the Author
David Abraham Adler (born April 10, 1947) is the author of nearly 200 books for children and young adults, most notably the Cam Jansen mystery series, the "Picture Book of..." series, and several acclaimed works about the Holocaust for young readers. Adler was born in New York City, New York. He graduated from Queens College in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics and education. For the next nine years, he worked as a mathematics teacher for the New York City Board of Education, while taking classes towards a master's degree in marketing, a degree he was awarded by New York University in 1971. In that same year, a question from his then-three-year-old nephew inspired Adler to write his first story, A Little at a Time, subsequently published by Random House in 1976. Adler's next project, a series of math books, drew on his experience as a math teacher. In 1977, he created his most famous character, Cam Jansen, originally featured in Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Stolen Diamonds, which was published that year. Adler married psychologist Renee Hamada in 1973, and their first child, Michael, was born in 1977. By that time Adler had taken a break from teaching and, while his wife continued her work, he stayed home, took care of Michael, and began a full-time writing career. Adler has three children and one grandson. He lives in Woodmere, New York.

Robert Casilla was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to parents from Puerto Rico. Like many children, Robert always loved to draw. As the new kid in his second grade class, he recalls doing a drawing of two birds with colored chalk on construction paper. His teacher noticed the drawing and then told the class, "We have an artist in the class!" Robert is thankful to her and all the teachers that motivated and helped him realize he had talent as an artist. Although he grew up in New Jersey, he did get to attend school in Puerto Rico as a fourth grader.

His formal training in art took place at the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he earned a BFA degree.

Since 1984, Robert has worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines, book publishers, postage stamps, educational publishers and others.

He has illustrated over 25 children's books, many of which are picture book biographies of people such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks and John F. Kennedy. He has also illustrated many multicultural children's books such as Jalapeno Bagels, The Little Painter of Sabana Grande, The Legend of Mexicatl and First Day in Grapes which won the Pura Belpr� Honor Award.

Robert visits many schools to talk about the visual journey a story takes him through to come up with the illustrations for his books. He also teaches art to young gifted artist one day a week.

Robert lives and works from his home in New Fairfield, Connecticut with his wife and two children, 3 cats and his feisty shih tzu dog.

Great for special education!

My husband is a special education teacher. He bought this to present to his students. It does a great job at giving special education students access to the content that other students will get from longer stories about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is very easily readable, and it has great illustrations to depict the way Martin Luther King's life was during the time of the civil rights movements. His students really enjoyed the text and illustrations, and the book also provided them with a very convenient timeline of the important dates of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. My husband and I will be added this book to our daughters' book collection for when they are older.

My daughter loves this book

My five-year-old daughter was fascinated with this book even though it didn't include fairies, animals, or dinosaurs. I was very happy with the information they presented which gives some basic information about Dr. King while not treating his death in such a way that might overly upset sensitive children like mine. The illustrations are wonderfully done and my daughter looked them over carefully for a long time. It is a wonderful opportunity to launch more discussions about racism and the way we treat other people because of their gender, race, or religion.

Excellent first biography

The entire "A picture book of..." biography series byDavid Adler is outstanding. Perfect for lower elementary studentsdoing their first real report. Makes a great read-aloud for non-readers as they are easily completed in one sitting. They are loaded with information including a timeline of important dates. The illustrations in this book are not cartoon-like as in his other biographies of Washington or Lincoln, but are appealing to young children.

Konx Om Pax is one of Crowley’s earliest occult publications, and it has often been found to be less than illuminating to new students of his work, despite its subtitle of "Essays in Light." To lighten the burden of the first-time reader and to introduce its first facsimile edition, a few words are in order .

The mystification begins with the often-misspelled title of this curious collection of essays. It is taken from a barbarous phrase spoken in the Eleusinian mysteries, konx ompax, which was picked up by the originators of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and incorporated into their Neophyte initiation ceremony; the titles of the officers in the latter ceremony are also taken from the Eleusinia. Crowley underwent the Neophyte ritual in November 1898; in it he learned that these mystic words were the Greek cognates of the Egyptian "Khabs am Pekht," here translated as "Light in Extension"—a bit of good mysticism but dubious etymology in keeping with the intellectual habits of the Golden Dawn’s magical founder, S. L. Mathers, who, as Crowley twits, "will borrow any required properties." Nevertheless Crowley took the derivation at face value and in the "Dedication and Counter-Dedication" goes on to identify KONX with the "LVX of the Brethren of the Rosy Cross."

The problem is already apparent: Crowley’s "baulking erudition," as noted by his friend Louis Wilkinson, forms a severe block to the understanding of his message. Many of the references in the "Dedication and Counter-Dedication" would have been unintelligible to contemporary readers other than the minuscule number of Golden Dawn initiates, and the morass of arcane allusion only deepens as one turns the pages. An additional difficulty is that, at the time of the composition of Konx Om Pax in 1906-7, Crowley had little experience and less sympathy with prose; his interests, bar a few odd essays, had been confined to poetry, outside of which he had never previously attempted to convey his own evolving occult philosophy. The writing of this book marks a turning point in Crowley’s career as an author and teacher; he is still in a sense his own audience, as witness the many private jokes and references to details of his life, but at the same time he is trying to bring others int! o the Light that he has seen.

The solution to the difficulties of Konx Om Pax is not far off. The last twenty years have seen a considerable number of books published on the Tarot, the Qabalah and the Golden Dawn’s history and rituals. Many of Crowley’s books, including his Confessions —vital to comprehending his life and works—are now widely available. Armed with these weapons, it is only a matter of time and some small effort before a dedicated student sees the way through the obscurities of Crowley’s style; indeed, part of the beauty of his books is that he engages a reader’s attention with the certainty that there is something behind what he writes. It would be a pity to be deprived of the pleasure of discovering for oneself the mysteries and the mirth hidden therein.

For these reasons it was decided to make Konx Om Pax available again in facsimile, and leave the work of deciphering the text to the earnest inquirer...

Mandatory reading

Read this wonderful, confounding book. Crowley isn't yet in full humbug mode when writing this... he's young and impetuous, full of rage and all the delight of a man straight out of college. He's not setting down orders, he's not giving you instructions, he's having some fun telling you some of his ideas. "Thien Tao" and "The Wake World" are the most important pieces in the book. "Thien Tao" is Crowley's mutant autobiography up to that point. He casts himself as an ancient Chinese sage, and explains the fall of the Golden Dawn in an amazingly subtle, very sharp satirical voice. "The Wake World" is a fairy tale about the progress of the student of Qabalah. It is reminiscent of "The Chymical Marriage of Christian Rosencreuz". This copy was a 1990 reprint, very lush and warm.

The title and subtitle say it all, as NPR essayist Macsai attempts in her first book to trace the milestones of female life, from junior high crushes to marriage and motherhood, in this collection of closely connected essays. Purportedly a celebration of "girlfriends"--odd as the moniker seems when applied to a mother of two, as the author is--the "girls" practically disappear as Macsai moves on to describe her forays into dating and marriage. Heterosexual in outlook, the sections on friendship cover familiar territory (girlfriends are practically perfect--they dish about men and clothes and eat ice cream with you, but you can't sleep with them). Macsai includes a supposedly "liberating" dating game you can play with your friends: assign a point value for various types of dates (lunch, dinner, meeting his parents, etc.) and see who wins. When the author meets her future husband, the reader is unprepared for what follows--a hackneyed account of the various ways her husband annoys her, summed up with the (unattributed) Elvis paraphrase: "I've never been quite sure which came first, the hotheaded woman or the oblivious man." Macsai's discussion of the age-old problem of how to balance children and the rest of life merely reinforces hidebound gender roles. Even worse, the humor of her outdated shtick often falls flat and her attempts to portray herself as hip ("I am a rhythm machine") don't ring true. This is The Rules couched in the language of talk-show, "you go, girl" feminism, unlikely to instruct or amuse. (Feb.)

Buy Lipshtick, read it (it'll take all of two days), write your name in the front cover and pass it through your circle of friends and hope that it eventually makes it back to you. Even if it doesn't make it back to your shelf, you will know that you've shared something really great. Pretty much any woman will find something to sympathize with and something to laugh at on every page. It's too bad the male "reader from NY, NY" didn't get it. I'd be interested to hear other men's responses.

I really enjoyed this book. The first 100 pages I spent getting used to Gwen's rhythms, the blitzkrieg of words, the hefty paragraphs, and new concepts (girl crushes. I was having a good time, thinking "this is good, this is clever," but not laughing out loud. Later on, I really grew to appreciate her style. The Dating Competition chapter was wonderful, especially the line with "...waiting for the idiots to kill one another or swim the wrong way like wayward sperm..." Still not laughing yet, but smiling. I laughed on Page 142. She imagines her parents and her boyfriend's parents in a Fiddler on the Roof matchmaking session ("a few hundred ducats and a blanket of goosedown" is what did it) and the fact that she doesn't mention 'Fiddler' makes it even more funny. When I got to The Beige Suit chapter, I wondered. How long is she going to rant about a beige suit? Eight pages? I impatiently flipped ahead to Hotheads, and the line "Who lit the fuse on your tampon." Big laugh. This whole chapter is inspired and hilarious. My workplace is full of women like this, so I can relate. The end of the book paints a nice and realistic picture of motherhood. I loved the image of her dancing to Elmo with her little ones. I really did enjoy the book, especially the later parts with marriage and babies. Oh, and I did go back and read The Beige Suit afterwards. It was pretty good after all. I want to give this to my sister for her next birthday - I know she'll love it.

Amazing

I adored this book. From the moment I picked it up I knew I was hooked. Never before have I read a book which offers better insight into being a woman and all the baggage that goes with it. I could not relate to most of the book, being only in high school, but all that I knew basically made me feel as though Ms. Macsai took my heart, opened it, and wrote a humorous, touching, and powerful book using my personal experience. Her style makes you feel so personally connected to her, almost as you were hearing each of these individual tales as one of her girlfriends. The majority of the time I was laughing or wishing I had one of my girlfriends here to enjoy her stunning book with me. The truth captured in Lipshtick was amazing, and deserves to be shared with all.
