About the Author
I started my pursuit in creative thinking and visualization as a young boy growing up in Puerto Rico. Drawing and creating was always a constant that allowed me to stay grounded and focused about the future. No matter what was happening around me, I could always look to the simplicity of a pencil and paper and know that there was a world of possibilities out there. I now hold a Master’s Degree in Architecture from Arizona State University and have over 15 years of experience as an architectural designer and illustrator. I intensely believe in the creative process at many different levels, beyond what I do in architecture alone. I have been creating my own series of a graphic novel since the time I was 15 years old, and am still working on it today as a means of voicing my story through narration and illustration. I am also extremely passionate about teaching others about the power of drawing as a thinking tool in design. For over 10 years now, I have instructed my own class called Looking, Thinking, Sketching at Arizona State University and Izmir University of Economics in Izmir, Turkey.

Great book, will read again.

I bought this book for a film class I took a couple of years ago, and enjoyed the sporadic assigned reading so much that I read the book from cover to cover. Interesting and well written, especially if you already enjoy the subject material. I didn't sell it back at the end of the semester (even though I was trying to afford next semester's books) and have kept it as part of my library. I'm sure I'll read it again someday, or at least parts of it and use it as reference.

Although I have browsed through this book many times in the library of the University of Canterbury, the only section I had a copy of was the one on comic plots. Being in the process of writing a study of the top-grossing comedies and the ways in which their plots enhance their psychological appeal, I was interested to see if the most popular ones confirmed to the plots as set out by Gerald Mast. This proved to be the case, although the vast majority follow his plots numbers one and seven.
My reason for obtaining my own copy of the book was to see if I could find further elucidation on some of the plots he describes. To date, I have not, although I suspect I may do as I continue reading the book.
The book is written in clear, easy-to-understand prose, unlike many books of this type, and plenty of examples are given - a few of them even from the films I am writing about!
In conclusion, this book is a welcome addition to my library, especially as I no longer have to face the parking hassles at the university whenever I wish to refer to it!

I was very disappointed - after reading 'The Unforgiven' I expected to really enjoy anything written by Alan Lemay, but this book did not engage me - I'd say, skip this one and read 'The Unforgiven'; it is an incredible book - I could not put it down.

Some of the stories were hard to follow, or left me hanging. I especially enjoyed the escapades of the character Whiskers Beck. He was always up to some sort of mischief. I laughed out loud at his follies while he was trying to fool someone else.

He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder and a former Board member of both the Toronto CFA Society and the Atlantic Canada CFA Society. He has completed the Professional Financial Planning Course (PFPC), the Canadian Securities Course (CSC), as well as the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC) Mutual Fund Course. He has been on the faculty at St. Mary's University and the Schulich School of Business, York University, and has taught preparation courses for the Canadian Securities Exam. Dr. Cleary has published numerous articles in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Financial Management, the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Multinational Financial Management, the Journal of Financial Research, the International Journal of Managerial Finance, the Canadian Investment Review, and the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences. Chock full of Dudeist wisdom this book really ties it all together. I sat down with it as soon as it arrived and I was not disappointed! Oliver Benjamin lays out Dudeist philosophy in an easy to follow way, touching on many subjects of interest to Dudeists and non-Dudeists alike. A wonderful addition to any arm-chair philosopher's library. Or for anyone wanting to find an easy going attitude to help them get through this whole derned human comedy.

Is this your homework, Larry?

Like my fellow compeers have posted, this book is great. It actually serves two purposes: 1) it's a great look at Dudeism & how it branches from the tree of Taoism (the right -ism for our time); 2) it provides a lot of great critique and analysis of the film itself. I'd almost venture that if you're a film studies kind of person, that you could use this text as a way of looking deeper into the meaning of a film through its imagery, dialogue, and plot.

If it's so great, why four stars and not five? Well, not to be a human paraquat but the book does have a lot of typos in it. A lot. And these are typos that Little Larry's dad could have caught, even in his condition. I'm just bringing this up in case you're hooked on that sort of thing (which apparently, I am - sorry, man).

But DON'T let that stop you from checking this book out - all the typos did for me was create a distraction. The messages are perfectly clear and the readability is easy-going. This will definitely be read again and again. Thanks for a great book!

So much more than I had anticipated!

This book is so much more than I had anticipated. I had expected an entertaining, probably light weight mixture of movie review and pop philosophy. Not so. It has opened, for me, a door to the world of Taoist thought. I have gained real insight from reading about such topics as love, money, and work, and their rightful roles in our lives. It's no college text, but if you are looking for a comprehensible, and enjoyable introduction to aTaoism (and to a certain degree, slackerism) give this book a try.

"The indescribableness of my mourning results from my failure to hystericize it..."

Roland Barthes' Mourning Diary is the most accurate, poignant written account of how grief is experienced. Barthes does not revert to cliche or overwrought metaphor--he does not attempt to apologize for the way he experiences mourning after his mother dies. Instead, these short fragments explore the process of living that one undergoes in the presence of absence that death most acutely is. This book is a treasured companion for any thinking mind who recognizes that "grief" is often most overwhelming when there is no feeling or emotivity involved.

classic Barthes book

Unlike a few of the recent Barthes publications his estate is digging up, this one is a gem. I'd give it five stars but I tend to save that for complete masterpieces. It could be five though. He hits on subtle feelings that elude most writers, especially on a topic such as this one, that could so easily turn corny. If you like Barthes or poetic writing and detest self-help books this one should be a great fit.

There are few (or no) books that deal with the real missing-you feelings of mourning a parent

Roland Barthes was French, so his view of death is slightly different from that of Americans, who view of death a sort of tremendous hindrance, an "infection" caught by the survivor, which must be cured or rid of - a sort of psychological dis-ease.

Self-help books abound on death, particularly the death of spouses and children. There are almost no books on the death of parents, but the fact is that the death of parents (particularly if one had a close, loving relationship with the parents) is a dramatic and life-changing event. Nothing will ever be the same after the death of parents.

In his diary, Barthes is open about his feelings. Often his entries are one-liners, but always are clearly expressed. It explains the feelings of a survivor moving through mourning, which is something I was grateful for, after having read so many books intended to serve as self-help models on how to overcome the feelings that come with mourning. Whether religiously-based or secular, most books for mourners can't help but bash mourners on the head just a little bit about how they "must" see the person is in "a better place," and how they should start taking steps to "move on" and away from the person that passed. They dwell on this, while softening the blow by saying that one shouldn't hurry. Prodding the mourner to stop it already, as if the mourner could stop the mourning behavior, or as if mourning were some sort of self-imposed toxic behavior, is what most books about death focus on. It can make a mourner feel a bit crazy to have this subtle get-over-it encouragement. Mourning is neither self-imposed, nor is it toxic to feel what is natural to be felt upon losing a very loved person that was an integral part of one's life.

This is not a book for anyone who believes living in denial about his/her emotions and feelings is preferable, and who opts to push those feelings deeply inside him or herself to a place where these emotions can reside forever, never understood or acknowledged.

This book was a relief to find.

A real brain pleaser!

I like this book a lot better than Holly's first book (More Than A Minute), which tried to cram everything there is to know about management into a few hundred pages. Using Your Brain is shorter, more to the point, and a lot more fun to read. More important, it's easier to put the ideas into action, which is one of my top criteria for a successful business book.

I especially like the "Playing With Your Brain" exercises, which provide direction for using the ideas in your business. These days, everyone has access to the same information and technology, and learning to use the brain more effectively is one of the last frontiers of management/leadership. Using Your Brain offers a lot of good ideas for assessing how we think, process information, and make decisions. It opened my eyes to how and why I sometimes get stuck in doing the same things over and over, and what to do about it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to use their two lbs. of gray matter more effectively - in business and in life.

Great info in general - Hyper changing world and importance of staying focused on winning. Some of the information wasn't fresh, but enjoyed book and am quoting the science in a workshop giving to Business Women who are planning and strategizing for 2014. I recommend.

Holly offers practical, hands-on application tools to really embed the information and retrain our brains. It's so helpful to actually have the exercises included to put into operation everything you are reading and learning about.
