Infection and Immunity, by John H. L. Playfair, Gregory J. Bancroft

Our immune system is a complex network of cells continually working against a barrage of attack from our environment to, quite literally, save our lives. But how do our bodies protect us from the bacteria, and other potentially life-threatening organisms, that surround us every day? Infection and Immunity 2E explains how, in the lucid, accessible style for which John Playfair is well known. Together with Greg Bancroft, an expert in infectious diseases, Playfair describes the main causes of infection that our bodies have to battle against - from bacteria to viruses - and explains that intricate and fascinating way that our bodies respond to infection - from detection of these potentially dangerous organisms, to their ultimate elimination. With examples of infectious diseases from across the world, and with vastly expanded coverage compared to the first edition, Infection and Immunity 2E will be perfect for biomedical science, bioscience and microbiology students who need to understand what causes infection, and how our immune systems respond.

Review
`Review from previous edition 'This is an immunology book that is a pleasure to read ... what raises it above the status of 'just another text book' is the inclusion of four discussion sections, called 'tutorials', consisting of a number of questions accompanied by extensive explanations ... anyone who requires a solid immunological basis on which to build can be confidently recommended to read this reasonably priced book before embarking on the more ambitious texts listed at the end of it.'' Frank Cox, King's College, London, Parasitology Today, vol. 12, no. 5, 1996

`'It does not presume any previous knowledge of either microbiology or immunology and is perfectly understandable by any scientifically educated reader.'' Aslib Book Guide, Vol. 61, No. 2, February 1996

`'This book is perfect for those with no knowledge of immunology and infectious diseases. With an index that is easy to use, Infection and Immunity is very user friendly - especially for readers new to the topic of infectious diseases and immunology. There are numerous tables and schematic diagrams used to illustrate key concepts in each chapter. These would make for excellent summary guides or study aids. For the medical students not wishing to spend time using dense and detailed textbooks however, a book like Infection and Immunity just might do the trick.'' University of Toronto Medical Journal, Vol. 73, No. 3, May 1996

`'enjoyable to read and simple enough for even an 'interested lay person' to be able to understand it'' D. Ala'Aldeen, Journal of Medical Microbiology, 1996

Good companion for public health classes for those w/ less background
By Castillonis
NOTE: I have the second edtion, 2004
I used this book for a public health class, before I took an Immunology class. Immunology is usually taught as a Junior year class at university, and requires a fair number of prerequisites. This book is less demanding and a very good choice for introducing students with less background to the concepts of infection and immunity. I highly recommend this book. It will especially help a student see the forest with an adequate amount about the trees. I am going to recommend it to the students in the COURSERA vaccine class. So, I disagree with the previous review. Immunology is a more challenging subject, and this book does an excellent job for students that have less background in biology and health sciences.

Not ideal
By Josi Martin
I purchased this book as it was our set text for a module on infection and immunity in my degree course.

I'm sure it may well be fine for those who are doing an entire degree course on this subject. However I have to warn those looking for an introduction to these subjects, but at graduate level, that this really isn't the most helpful introduction to these subjects. In fact if you can only afford one book - *don't* get this one.

The only reason I gave it two stars, rather than one, is because I respect the learning that has gone into this. However I have had to purchase other books to fill in on the basics as it's inpenetrable for someone doing these subjects for the first time.

Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf (Forgotten Realms), by R. A. Salvatore

Bloody war rages across the Forgotten Realms world in the third book of the Companions Codex, the latest series in R.A. Salvatore's New York Times best-selling saga of dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden.

In the evolving world of the Forgotten Realms setting, the Sundering has given way to months of cloud-cloaked darkness, and war rages under that oppressive sky. The orcs have broken a hard-fought treaty that's held, however tentatively, for a hundred years, and the time to settle old scores has devolved into an all-out brawl for control of the ancient realms of the North.

The story of the Companions picks up again...
By C. Jefferson
[Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.]

The story of Dritzzt Do’Urden and the returned Companions of the Hall continues in this third installment of the Companions Codex miniseries. The war with the Orcs continues, with the Drow aiding and urging them on. The Dwarven and Elvish settlements are likely to fall under the continued pressure. And with two dragons on their side, how could the Orcs not win? But the Companions aren’t ones to give up easily. With a little strategy and some assistance from an unexpected ally, it might just be possible to hold them off and be victorious. But even if they think it’s possible, that doesn’t mean it’s probable–and it certainly doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy.

I enjoyed this much more than the previous installment, which I think was mostly setup for this one. With all the players in their proper places on the board, we’re treated to some epic battles, some cunning and decisive moves, and more of the truth behind each entity’s involvement in this conflict. There’s are more going on here than it may have seemed in the beginning. And each of the characters really gets their moment to shine, making it all the more enjoyable to read. I’m definitely very curious how things will continue to resolve in the next book.

Vengeance is sweet
By Kelly
There are nearly thirty books in the ‘Legend Of Drizzt’ series and a number of side ventures. When you get this far into a series, spoilers are inevitable. So if you’re not familiar with the ‘Legend’ series, much of the content of ‘Vengeance Of The Iron Dwarf’ will confound, and perhaps ruin you for everything that comes before.

For those who have journeyed this far, vengeance is sweet.

At the end of ‘Rise Of The King’, the hundred year peace between the orcs and the dwarves had shattered. Nesme had fallen and the dwarves were besieged. The surface elves had yet to decide how the conflict affected them and the drow elves were so busy stabbing one another in the back, it was a wonder any of them survived until the end of the book. Toss in Jarlaxle’s fiddling and it was a very long wait for the next instalment in the ‘Companion Codex’.

In ‘Vengeance Of The Iron Dwarf’, party lines shift and align – as they have to. The orcs outnumber every other army combined, so breaking the siege isn’t simply a matter of killing the enemy. The dwarves have to fight smarter. They have to fight together. The elves and humans can bolster their efforts, but everyone has to stop thinking about what’s in it for them. Of course, the drow contingent thinks only of what’s in it for them and I spent a good portion of ‘Vengeance’ wondering what was in it for Jarlaxle. His help is often the dubious sort, but over the last century or so (Toril-time), he’s become a little more predictable and he definitely has a soft spot for Drizzt.

I enjoyed reading about Team A – the Companions of the Hall – and Team B – the remnants of Drizzt’s new crew who work together here. Personality clashes were inevitable, but so were the spell combinations, to borrow an RPG term. Having everyone on the board also fostered the feeling that grew throughout this book, that the fate of the dwarves didn’t matter only to the dwarves. The shining moment, for me, came when Bruenor revealed his plan. He’s no longer the king of Mithral Hall and knows well he can’t wear that crown a third time. But he cannot watch all he strived for fall into confusion. I also delighted in reading Wulfgar and Regis working together. They are such an unlikely, yet compatible pair.

There are several side bets won and lost as the dwarves attempt to break the siege, providing a few story threads that will complicate future tales. But aside from a couple of interesting revelations, the plot here isn’t twisty. ‘Vengeance Of The Iron Dwarf’ is a straightforward book of tactics, where Salvatore pits two forces against one another and crunches the numbers back and forth. Any trickery is reserved for combat and it’s all well fought.

Where to go from here? Bruenor has a throne to claim and hold, so it will be back to Gauntlgrym to kick some drow backside, once and for all. Hopefully!

The Future is Bleak (and not for the Silver Marches)
By sno4wy
In my review of the last book, Rise of the King, I gave an extra star (http://www.amazon.com/review/RFON3ITNT41GU/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm). Now, I'm wishing that I hadn't. For Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf, the highest rating I'd give is probably a 3.5, but because I rounded up last time, I'm rounding down this time and find that doing so doesn't improperly reflect my overall view of this book.

I do like the Drizzt series. I do enjoy reading the books in it. I did have a good time reading this latest installment, and I feel that it's a stronger book than the previous one. Big events that transpire are more cohesive, thus feeling more relevant and interesting. The overarching picture finally comes together after an entire book of nothing but creating isolated pieces that have little to do with each other. In Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf, there are fun little details interspersed in between major battle scenes that allow the reader to experience the particulars of how the characters live and die. Through specifics like Aleina and her old comrade-in-arms giggling together as they admire an unaware Wulfgar from a distance to exactly how Tos'un's body is shattered in the demise of the younger white dragon, this book offers readers micro views of an otherwise broadly-spanning macroscopic event. While Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf would still not be very approachable to a new reader just entering the series, it is able to stand on its own better than its predecessor and is overall a better book.

That being said, I have a lot of issues with Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf. Starting from the most minor of them, I'm not sure if Salvatore's editor doesn't pay enough attention or if the author himself doesn't understand the proper usage of, for instance, "site" versus "sight". The number of instances that word misuse and just blatant typos occur is staggering, especially when considering how well-known and successful Salvatore is, compared to other authors in the Forgotten Realms franchise. Mistakes like these are just lazy.

An increasing issue I'm having with Salvatore's writing is that his style is rather static. I had no problems with it when I was younger, heck I didn't even notice it. However, I'm astonished that after almost thirty books later and a quarter century of professional writing, that his writing hasn't much improved. Yes, there is noticeable improvement between Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf and The Crystal Shard, where it all began, but the change is along the order of five years and not twenty-five. While I'm glad that he didn't use "six hundred pounds of panther" even once this time around, let's face it, as "killing teeth", "killing blow", "killing strike", etc etc demonstrates, "killing" is just not that good of an adjective to describe a deadly force, especially not when used as much as he does. In addition, Salvatore uses, "How [subject] [action]!" entirely too much, and it is yet another sentence structure that conveys very little as to the extremity that something is happening, especially when used in as much abundance as he does. Furthermore, it takes away from the whole because EVERYTHING is, "How something transpired!!!"Overall, rather than describing to the reader what is happening through the use of elements of the environment, Salvatore tells the readers what is happening by stating a play-by-play of events. This is not evocative or engaging writing.

Salvatore has always had issues with consistency, ones that span multiple books sometimes and ones that occur within a singular book. Both sorts of inconsistencies exist in Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf, and in ways that make me confused about how exactly to take things. Again, to start off with a minor example, early on, Regis is said to have been struck with a spear in the chest, and Wulfgar breaks off the shaft to leave the spearhead in his chest. Later on, the spearhead has inexplicably relocated to his shoulder. Fundamentally, the nature of Regis' injury doesn't matter all that much, as with a bit of healing magic and careful extraction it's no longer relevant to the plot. However, Saribel's personality in the later part of the book seems to have taken a complete 180 from what she has been described to be like in the previous books. Before, Saribel was the lesser of the Xorlarrin priestesses, with her older sister Berellip being more brutal, more loud-spoken, more physically imposing and more intelligent. In fact, Saribel is stated on numerous occasions to be more than a little dimwitted. Tiago even notes that despite Saribel's marked inferiority, he still prefers her to her sister because of sexual reasons. However, in Vengeance, Saribel not only displays cleverness, she does so to such an extent as to be able to impress the likes of Jarlaxle. And that's not all -- she not only impressed Jarlaxle with her "quick wit and lightning mental reflexes", but apparently it is something that she does "as usual" (chapter 17). Granted, I may be misunderstanding what that "as usual" is modifying, for perhaps it is modifying the "demanded", and it certainly wouldn't be unreasonable for a priestess of Lolth to be a regular at making demands. However, the inconsistency still exists in that Saribel has been presented as a slow-witted waif and now suddenly has undergone a transformation on the order of Quenthal's after being imbued with the brains of Yvonnel Baenre. Saribel's level of intellect matters more than Regis' temporary injury because she is drow, and intricately involved in the entire drow ploy in the Silver Marches. Perhaps she'll become increasingly unimportant, but how is a reader supposed to surmise or even believe in the degree of intrigue that Salvatore and the Realms assert to be inherent to the drow when we can't even have the basic facts straight? I suppose I'll just have to settle for waiting to be spoon-fed the explanations of an elaborate scheme, mysterious only because its details are so inconsistent, sometimes completely unstated, that it's as impossible to solve as a puzzle from pieces of a different set and missing pieces from its own set.

I can understand the need to write epic encounters in fantasy, for awesome things like dragon battles are why we love fantasy. However, while Salvatore has always suffered from overpowered characters, things are just getting more than a little Mary Sue, especially in the case of Catti-brie. While I commend him for bringing back Catti-brie's old garment, I winced when it just conveniently turned out to be a Robe of the Archmagi. But that's still not enough power for Catti-brie. Despite having a history of being terrible at divination magic, all of a sudden, standard divination techniques aren't good enough for her. Not only does she use a completely new means of divination that's arguably the exact opposite of the standard (fire instead of water), it's a significantly more powerful method and suddenly, this not even a fledgling diviner can divine on the order of dedicated practitioners of clairvoyance. Along the same lines as the sudden identification of Robes of the Archmagi, I shake my head as I wonder what new and unbelievably powers her fire ring and spellscars may conveniently manifest in the future.

On the subject of Catti-brie, and related to my earlier point about inconsistencies, while I thought that Bruenor's conclusions from Drizzt and Catti-brie's dance to be quite beautiful, I can't help but balk at the extreme to which Salvatore portrays their love compared to his early stance on their relationship. At one point, Salvatore vehemently stated that Catti-brie and Drizzt wouldn't ever be a couple, and now we get a scene where they're moving so compatibly that, "No two creatures in Faerun were more attuned to the movements of each other." (Prologue) I get that people change their minds and that's fine that Salvatore did, but what also bothers me about such a definitive statement like that is that it disregards, almost insults, the intellectual property of other authors in the Realm, as well as presenting inconsistencies and issues within itself. In Salvatore's own writing, the impression of synchronicity was a lot stronger in Tarathiel and Innovindil's fighting style, at least for me. In that case, it was also more believable, because both were elves, both had similar fighting styles and both had lived for a very long time. Heck, that fluid compatibility is felt even more strongly when Artemis Entreri and Drizzt fought back to back, and again that made sense because from the getgo we were given the impression that the two are mirrors of each other. Yes, we know that Drizzt and Catti-brie trained together, and we are led to believe that the pair are eternal soulmates, but their fighting styles have always been different enough and the gap between their skill levels big enough that what Salvatore describes in their dance is simply impossible, especially compared to all the other creatures of Faerun. Furthermore, while Catti-brie kept her mind through her reincarnation, that doesn't magically imbue her body with the muscle-memory of her previous life, and unless she's all of a sudden MORE skilled as a fighter than she was (for surely she'd need to be to be so physically compatible with Drizzt in that dance) in addition to suddenly being a super powerful mage, I really don't know how more Mary Sue she could get.

I'm not sure what's supposed to be going on with Bruenor. There hasn't been any indication or explanation of his sudden increased connection with the dwarven gods. He's sat on the throne of Gauntlgrym a couple of times, but other than that, why is he suddenly able to summon divine power when he needs it? Is Salvatore implying that he's a chosen of the three dwarven gods? It doesn't matter if he is, because even Chosens can't routinely perform the feats that he can. It just feels like Salvatore is taking the lazy route in marking someone as heroic. We know that Bruenor is a great fighter because we see cheesy Mortal Kombat-esque scenes in which time slows down and he's frozen in the air slowly delivering a roundhouse chop straight to face of the big baddies, but that's not how fights work. When I was reading that scene, I strongly got the impression that Salvatore was thinking of those movie stop-action scenes for inspiration. That doesn't work, Mr. Salvatore. Please leave the movie mechanics for the motion pictures. So much ridiculous things happen along those lines that I was actually surprised that the dispelling of the darkening was a ploy by Gromph. Drizzt's corny ascension fit in perfectly with all of the other contrived details that have occurred.

I really don't think I can get into Salvatore's portrayal of female characters at this time, but suffice to say, I wasn't at all surprised at the appearance of a super hot Knight Commander of the Knights in Silver. Women do not need to look like Victoria's Secret models with make-up on naturally to be compelling characters. Women below that impossible standard should not be immediately recognizable as doomed for death (i.e. Delly Curtie).

In conclusion, I wouldn't have wrote this long review if I didn't care. I like the Drizzt series and I care a lot about it. It is not my intent to disparage Salvatore as an author. He has a process down, and kudos to him that it's clearly a successful and profitable process. But, I feel and fear that he's complacent with it, to the point that he doesn't care about his writing enough to improve it. I haven't discussed the redundancy of the plotline since other reviewers have commented on it, but based on indications that he's given, it seems that the future will just bring the same sorts of things as before. Yes, there's the saying that history repeats so the repetition can be claimed as valid, and heck, I LOVE the Sellswords adventures, but I don't want to see rehashing of the Companions saving the world and Entreri/Jarlaxle shenanigans until the end of time. Part of what made the Neverwinter tetralogy so compelling for me is that they clearly moved Salvatore and Drizzt out of their comfort zones. Now both are back in their old comfortable habits, and things are returning to the same beaten path. I worry about the future direction of this series. I don't want to outgrow it, because it has really meant a lot to me, but its future makes me trepidacious.

Great book to have for your endodontic practice
By Elen_anna
This book provides a comprehensive view of modern endodontic microsurgery ranging from case selection considerations to using the operating microscope to surgical techniques and instruments. The recommended reading lists at the end of each chapter are also very useful for those requiring more information. One of the best things about this book is the number of pictures and cases which help to illustrate the authors' point. Sure, endodontic microsurgery has moved on somewhat since then (i.e. predominant use of MTA as retrofilling material and the use of endoscopes by some), but the principles have not changed and this is still a very useful book to have in the collection for any training and already practicing endodontists.

An anachronism
By Terri Harris
This book is a bizarre stylistic jumble. The plot reads like something out of the Harlequin Presents line- like "The Greek Billionaire Prince's Captive Nanny Virgin Love Slave Bride". The set-up is there- the heroine is a nice girl who is trying to get rid of her lying husband, and the lead is a French rich guy. He thinks she's a golddigging tramp having an affair with his brother and recovering from a really horrendous divorce. He acts like he hates her and spends most of the book seeming to punish her for the fact that he finds her attractive. Standard Harlequin Presents rot (no offense to those who like that style of book, but when I read them I mainly want to see the heroine deck that guy, because what woman in her right mind would let a guy get away with that? I don't care how fine and rich you are, if you're a jerk you can keep it moving. They never have anything approaching a sense of humor, and I just find them... degrading. Basically, it is not in any way my fantasy).

The stylistic mash comes because this is the Harlequin ROMANCE line. The male lead keeps on acting like an ass, but he really never does anything that bad. I mean he's a jerk, but compared to the standard of behavior in these kinds of books it's really not that bad. He keeps on apologising to her for acting poorly, and she keeps on reacting strongly to his 'abuse' but there really isn't any. It's as if the author had to tone it down to keep in line with the standards of this kind of series romance. It was just... weird.

Ultimately it just doesn't work. It was... kind of boring. The characters had no sense of humor, and lacked the pure melodrama to make up for it.

Molly looked out of the window as the world whizzed by. The car was moving fast and the engine growled and vibrated underneath her. Damien sat opposite, and the driver had his own compartment behind a black divider – they were in their own little world, with only the blurry buildings and each other to occupy them.

Now that she was in the car she wasn’t sure if she had done the right thing. She had arranged to meet Jason – she had made an agreement that she would meet him and go on a date with him and given him the impression that she was looking forward to it. So why was she here? She tried to think back and discern the specific moment when she had decided that she was going to come. She couldn’t. There was no specific moment. It was something else – some inexplicable energy that buzzed around Damien.

From Publishers Weekly
Three historians here team up for a worthy, demanding foray into the battle over the academy, taking on "both the relativists on the left and the defenders of the status quo ante on the right." The authors argue that skepticism and relativism about truth, in science, history and politics, stems from the democratization of American society and higher education. They survey the "heroic model" of science produced in the Enlightenment, the roots of relativism in Hegel, and the influence of Marx, Durkheim and Weber on latter-day historical schools. They tackle the virtuous mythologies of American history, and critiques by progressives like Charles Beard and post-WW II social historians. They also cite 1960s historians of science who launched politicized critiques and postmodernists who attacked claims of objectivity. The authors urge historians to have a "stronger, more self-reflexive and interactive sense of objectivity." In a final chapter addressing "political correctness" and multiculturalism, the authors sensibly call for a middle ground, but diminish their message with a paucity of models. Appleby teaches at UCLA, Hunt at the University of Pennsylvania and Jacob at Manhattan's New School for Social Research.

From Library Journal
In a tightly reasoned narrative full of -isms and -ists, the authors, all academic historians, relate how religion and science legitimized the writing of history as a vehicle for the revelation of truth, progress, and nationalism rather than as a medium for the examination of collective individuals. They critically dissect various schools of historiographic thought and make a plea for a multicultural democratization of history in America. We are reminded of the authors' championship of women, minorities, and workers at every opportunity. The prose bounces along more than it flows, and the dashes of irony are welcome. Footnotes conclude each chapter. Rather than aggressively screaming for reform in the writing of American history, this book describes how we arrived where we are and suggests we begin the journey anew, only this time allowing everyone to participate. This is an enlightening overview of American historiography for public and academic libraries.

What is the role of history--what is the point of history--in a postmodern world of "absolutisms dethroned," in a technological society that has become deeply skeptical of the Enlightenment's heroic model of science? Telling the Truth is a fascinating historiographical essay that traces the scientific and political ideas and ideals of the Enlightenment through American history from the Revolutionary War to the present. It is the "insistent democratization of American society," the authors argue, that has produced our "skepticism and relativism about truth, not only in science but also in history and politics," yet they maintain "that truths about the past are possible, even if they are not absolute, and hence are worth struggling for." Appleby and her coauthors have produced an unusually lucid and inclusive explication of what is ultimately at stake in the culture wars over the nature, goals, and efficacy of history as a discipline. Historical joy ride
By Brett Williams
Well written with ample empirical examples and insights most of us would never consider. This book is for anyone interested in tracing Western perspectives from the emergence of reason under the thumb of ignorance and dogma, through the advent of science, to muddlings of our present era returning to ignorance and dogma under the confines of censorship and totalitarian Political Correctness.
Driving forces that made America and the West what it became are surveyed - forces including the birth of reason, influence of science and our Western notion of progress. Focused on their topic, our authors properly consider what matters most to America and the West, excluding a vast array of other cultures because those cultures (Mayan, Hutu, Chilean, Eskimo - a virtually endless list) have little or absolutely nothing to do with Western development. Thus we are saved from useless inclusion of irrelevance. Nor do they waste trees on a cacophony of "voices" with something opposing to say about the facts of history as though their intent is to produce committee minutes. Noted, repeatedly, are oversights and outright suppression of females as bared from the men's club, but it is treated as a fact of history, not a call to arms.
Results of these forces included exaltation of history and "heroic science" as a means of positive reference for America (and Europe) that has since been attacked by factions wishing in part to make history's picture larger while reinventing history in ways that deny credit for anyone but their own group. It requires imagination, but the authors clarify how successful Postmodernist relatives have been in advancing the most ridiculous ideas, and, as noted, would not be given a second thought were they not becoming so dominant at our universities. Ideas such as; We invent theories in science, we do not discover them; What was not said or not written is more important than what was - as everyone in every period is said to have been political and fully so with no regard for truth. Thus whatever point was made was in fact a diversion hiding what they "really" meant. This brings to bear creative talents of our finest historians and "text interpreters" as they expend lifetimes inventing, out of thin air, what the truth "really" was. A boundless exercise as what was not spoken or written remains infinite, while what was is limited. And such conclusions from those who paradoxically preach "the truth is, there is no truth, and that's the truth".
Thankfully the authors state the obvious. "Relativism, a modern corollary of skepticism" not only reasonably questions but is now used to promote doubt in knowledge of any kind, while to the contrary our authors argue "truths about the past are possible, even if they are not absolute". For those who claim we can know nothing, and that even our theories of nature are pure, politicized imagination, we are reminded that artifacts exist - remains of civilizations, buildings, monuments, graveyards on battlegrounds, movements resulting from written words and speeches. As for inventing scientific theories as simply another false Western bias, one may wonder how all those atoms and galaxies know our political views well enough to behave precisely as predicted by theory.
The authors commit the error of confusing science with scientists - science being an ideal, while scientists remain human - and they wrongly promote a reference which claims the defense industry as dominated by scientists when it is rather dominated by engineers. This offering to reinforce a notion that science is political. (Indeed, scientists may be.) With an open mindedness bordering on mere "inclusivity" Postmodernists are given limited credit, stating they "deserve" to be heard on some matters - which left me wondering why serious historians would squander time on sophomoric reflections of declining education and trite exercises in sensitivity toward the absurd. We might consider the notion of a moon made of green cheese still holds promise if a certain vast system of conditions concerning our measurements and conceptions exist - say that we are in fact being manipulated by aliens. But any advancement in our understanding of the human condition is bound to be wasted. As a German engineer once said, "I have no time to waste on probable failures." So why waste it?
An assumption is made from the outset - common to anyone's era, which is not challenged - that the past was incorrect in their perspective. Perhaps we are wrong in refuting their positivism. Instead we assume without question the heroic models were flawed. Despite what we consider the past's delusions and narrow mindedness, we are never offered an option that their perspective, though incomplete, was superior to our own in which winners at the auction are those with the most terrible things to say about who we are. Perhaps the authors saw this as too "inclusive" and a probable failure.

Excellent!
By Coleman J. Goin
I found this book to be one of the most valuable and most hopeful books I have read in a long time. As a High School teacher of American history, I have long grappled with the question of historical truth and how best to teach it to students. I have also wondered if I could justify my own profession, since American history instruction so often seems to be simply political indoctrination in one form or another. This book gave me hope that my efforts are not in vain. The book traces the evolution of history from the enlightenment model of scientific history through postwar issues of postmodernism and relativism;. and the authors persuasively argue that historical truth is possible, even if not absolute. The book is not light reading - I was not able to race through the book, but had to wade through it, so to speak. However, I do feel the book is well worth reading. It is well written, balanced and fair-minded, and it transcends the simplistic conservative-liberal debate over the teaching of history. I feel the book should be read by everyone who is concerned with the teaching of history or the question of historical truth.

Well Intentioned But Flawed
By R. Albin
Written by three distinguished historians, this is a well intentioned but only partly successful effort to develop a systematic approach to historical truth. The authors open with a set of historiographic chapters covering the development of history as a discipline since the 18th century. This is a generally concise and nice precis of the importance of the natural sciences as a model of inquiry, the idea of history of a teleological and progressive model of modernity, the development of secular and nationalized professional history in the 19th century, and especially the emergence of a strong and rather distorted triumphalist historical narrative about the USA. This is followed by some good descriptions of how this tradition then began to run into problems. The somewhat "heroic" model of scientific history became its own form of dogma, and with the Progressive era, serious doubts aroase about the 19th century triumphalist model. The authors are also justly and conventionally critical of naive positivist views of historical explanation.

This is generally well done, though the need for concision may have led the authors to some incomplete and inaccurate statements. For example, the authors' facile attribution of late 19th century racism as the inadvertant consequence of Darwin's theory ignores the substantial contribution of influential non-Darwinist thinkers like Gobineau and Agassiz. Similarly, the authors' discussion of 19th century historiography ignores the fact that the greatest 19th century American historian was the disenchanted Boston Brahmin Henry Adams. Adams' work is a sustained and brilliantly written presentation of history as irony.

The authors really go astray in the middle of the book with their chapter "Discovering the Clay Feet of Science." This is a description of the misleading nature of the "heroic" model of science and how this "discovery" provoked an intellectual crisis. I don't doubt the authors' assertion that this was a major issue in the community of historians, but the authors' implication that this was a general intellectual crisis is fairly silly. As the authors point out, one of the major features of academic life in the last 50 years is the enormous expansion of universities and the democratization of access to a university education. The authors seem to be unaware that the other great change in universities over that last 2 generations is the enormous expansion and investment in the natural sciences. At my large research university, a majority of the faculty are in the natural sciences or related fields like Medicine or Engineering. In terms of funding, the natural sciences are even more dominant. The discoveries the authors that authors see as uncovering the clay feet of science had no effect on natural scientists or the university administrators who hire them. The suggestion that the writings of a few historians of science or literary critics provoked a general intellectual crisis is hyperbole. THe authors make a similar series of inaccurate claims about the Cold War, which they see as producing "distortions" of science. While there were real problems with Cold War administration of science, the fact is that rivalry with the Soviet Union was one of the factors that turned the Federal government into the major patron of American science. The Cold War was partly responsible for the enormous progress made by American science in the last 50 years.

Because the authors exaggerate the effects of historical revision of scientific progression, they similarly exaggerate the importance of post-modernism/deconstructionism. The authors characterize this movement correctly as an intellectual deadend. But the amount of attention and number of pages devoted this is essentially inconsequential movement is wholly out of proportion to its actual importance.

The authors positive contribution is an attempt to define an approach to history they call "practical realism." The authors have a good discussion of the problems with establishing truthfulness and causal relationships in historical analysis. Their recommendation, epistemically based on Peirce's fallibalism, is a modestly realist approach based on careful accumulation of data, constant testing of defined hypotheses, skepticism about data, peer review, and a community of scholars open to alternative interpretations. If this sounds familiar, its because it is. Its essentially a version of the best practices of modern science. This is crashing through an open door with a vengeance. As an aside, the authors contrast their position with the "metaphysical realism" of Karl Popper and his logical positivist "associates." Popper would be surprised to find himself grouped with the Vienna Circle philosophers of whom he was so critical. In fact, Popper's work has a strong fallibalist orientation with strong kinship to Peirce's work.

The authors also get themselves into trouble with some fairly careless statements. For example, "the exclusive dominance of European cultural forms in the United States in now consignable to a specific period,..." This from authors whose recommended approach to historical analysis is a clear mimic of western scientific practices and based on a philosophical approach articulated by a 19th century American man. Fallibalist epistemology is based on the work of several imporant 17th and 18th century European philosophers and has roots in Hellenistic Greece. This is about as European as it gets. I don't see the authors recommending nor would they recommend authentic non-European approaches like Theravada Buddhism or Confucianism.

Finally, the authors would like a form of American national history suitable for a democratic society. What does this mean? The authors are appropriately critical of instrumental uses of history like the triumphalist version of 19th century America and they are cautious about the dangers of making the same types of error in things like 'Afrocentric' history. So what is their solution? They are not completely explicit but it appears they wish a systematic, accurate, unbiased account of the past that is fair to the historical experiences of all relevant actors, a kind of inclusionary multiculturalism. But how is this different from naive positivism?
