Quickly revise typical SQL questions and answers

This book aims to help you succeed in a SQL developer interview, how does it fare?

This book covers interview questions that relate to the role of a SQL developer, with a bias towards a Microsoft
environment. Available only as a low-cost Kindle ebook, it consists of eight short chapters, and two appendices. The book covers both technical and soft skill questions.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 SQL Server Questions
This chapter contains questions largely related to the SQL Server environment. Areas covered include: converting flat files to a relational database, port numbers, SQL Profiler, BCP, SQL injection, storing user names and passwords. Example questions include:
• What is SQL Server?
• What is a relational database?
• What is SQL Profiler?
• What is BCP?
The answers to the questions are typically quite terse. You will not be able to use this book to learn the subject detail, because the answers are much too short. However, if you know the subject already, the questions (and answers) do provide useful examples/starting points of what to expect at an interview. Additionally, the questions might highlight some of your weaker areas of knowledge that need further attention.

Conclusion
This book aims to help you pass an interview for a SQL Developer. It provides plenty of basic SQL questions, and terse answers, perhaps too terse. If you already know the topics discussed, then the questions and answers are good starting points to expand upon. Most of the questions are relatively basic, but don’t cover all basic areas (e.g. Common Table Expressions are not mentioned).

The book could be improved by including more questions, providing more detailed answers, and by asking and answering more open technical questions (e.g. what troubleshooting techniques have you used? What do you do if a query suddenly runs slowly?).

Overall, I enjoyed this book, but that might be because I like answering questions! The book should be useful for SQL developers who already know the topics, and want to quickly revise some typical questions and answers – but don’t expect to learn too much. If you don’t know all the answers, the book will highlight the topics you should focus on.

This books is very easy to read and it helped me a lot with a job interview that I had. I am still waiting to hear back if I got the job, but I know that this book helped me so much. This book is not meant to learn SQL Server, because if you are interviewing for a job you would already know that. It just helps you provide the correct answers when asked certain questions.

PHIL JACKSON is arguably the greatest coach in the history of the NBA. His reputation was established as head coach of the Chicago Bulls from 1989-1998; during his tenure, Chicago won six NBA titles. His next team, the Los Angeles Lakers, won five NBA titles, from 2000 to 2010. He holds the record for the most championships in NBA history as a player and a head coach. He also has the highest winning percentage of any NBA coach (.704). Jackson was a player on the 1970 and 1973 NBA champion New York Knicks. In 2007 Jackson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

A former editor for Sports Illustrated and People, HUGH DELEHANTY is the co-author with Phil Jackson of the bestselling memoir, Sacred Hoops.

The Zen Master Revealed!

11 Rings: The Soul of Success is Phil Jackson's newest book and an interesting look inside the mind of one of the greatest American professional sports coaches in history. The entire book is filled with interesting quotes, historical and personal examples, relevent analogies concerning his theories on coaching, leadership, and teamwork. I find Jackson's mind to be very fascinating, and in a way, much less organized than John Wooden's more disciplined approach to life, leadership and coaching. I am reminded of the differences between an artist and an engineer, if I was generalizing.

There are a few points I found most interesting. Jackson discusses the limited similarities between part of a winning sports team and part of a tight-knit military unit. He also discusses the difference between championship teams and less successful teams, and even the variences between championship teams he has coached or played for. Since I have had the privilege of living both experiences (not at the professional sports level), I found the comparisons and contrasts effective. He rightly points out that playing basketball is not the same as being willing to smother a live grenade to save a comrade's life, but that the best teams, in any walk of life, develop trust and love for each other. Their ability to perform at the highest levels goes beyond purely technical skill or physical talent and approaches the spiritual.

Jackson talks frequently about Kobe Bryant and there are some comparisons to him and Michael Jordan made in the book. I found all of the comments Jackson makes about the many players he's coached to be interesting because he recognizes each had particular challenges and gifts, as do we all. How he helped individual players, and the teams, to overcome their challenges and successfully utilize their individual and collective gifts was insightful and a demonstration of his genius at people skills.

The last point I want to share is that I feel Phil Jackson often gets unfairly criticized because he won championships while having all-world talent on each championship team. Any coach would like to have Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant play on the roster. It takes talent to win-both playing and coaching. All of those players played for other coaches who didn't win championships while they were teamed up. Phil Jackson repeatedly brings home the lessons of team chemistry, motivation, maximizing an individual's talents, human relationships and a myriad of other "soft-skills" which are difficult for some people to accept as the other reasons for his success. It wasn't just about having the best players. John Wooden, Pat Riley, Red Aurbach and Phil Jackson were successful because they knew how to develop and utilize the talent of their players to become champions. Jackson shares insights on how he was able to help great players become part of great teams.

11 Rings will read like Phil Jackson's other books, so if you liked them, you will most likely enjoy this one. I believe he merits discussion as being the greatest basketball coach in history, if that means much to you. Certainly, anyone who reads 11 Rings and is a basketball fan will find some nuggets here. Likewise, anyone who is interested in building family, teamwork, people skills or leadership skills can read 11 Rings and find some useful lessons and interesting insights.

11 Rings is quite good, but not a significant or innovative contribution to literature. Because of the organization of Jackson's thoughts and the similarity to his previous books, I believe this rates 4 stars. Enjoy!

Great read whether you're a sports lover or not!

As a mom who spent 12+ years watching my daughter play volleyball, basketball, and throw discus/shot put, I have seen my share of coaching styles. Some were awesome, some should have been fired, one was fired. Throughout it all, I always knew it could be more humane and motivating without the degrading, intimidating, and negative approach many coaches used. I always loved watching Phil Jackson coach the Bulls and read some about his coaching style at the time. But his book has great information that can be applied to any job, including parenting. Clearly, championships can be won while coaching a team respectfully and influencing them not just as a player, but as a human being. Every coach, teacher, camp counselor, parent would learn from this book. All athletes/children of those who do, will benefit greatly. I bought it for my Kindle, but just bought it in hardback too, as I want to highlight some parts and get all the book referrals he includes.

A perfect storm in reverse

I love this book. It's a perfect storm in reverse: every good thing about it is enhanced by all the other good things that surround it.

For a lifelong basketball fan with a deep interest in spiritual practice, creative improvisation, managing talent, and eliciting outstanding performance, it's a heady mix.

The book backfills my memory of the great games I still replay in my mind, going back to a limping Willis's unforgettable two shots in the final game against the Lakers in 1970. But it is more than an intimate history of the game from a brilliant analyst. You get to follow the growth of players like Jordan, Pippin, and Bryant, people who were great to start with, as they into something beyond mere skill and athleticism. You understand the delicacy with which Jackson handled someone as flamboyant and ornery as Rodman, successfully converting his eccentricities into consistent contributions at the highest level.

But the book is also a toolbox filled with brilliant how-tos: How to fuse gifted individuals into what Jackson calls a "tribe;" How to instill confidence and independence in fragile egos; how to elicit consistently great performance from every member of the team, from the stars to the role players coming off the bench; how to manage "the elephant," (i.e. Jerry Krause). There are even simple but effective instructions in Zen Meditation.

Eleven Rings is a lucid exposition of the ways it is still possible to function originally, creatively, and responsibly, while working with others. He reminds me of Ingmar Bergman and Robert Bresson in that respect. Both were filmmakers with a religious dimension, who were known for their creative collaborations. But they worked at one remove from the commercial mainstream. Jackson seems to have succeeded under the glare of the bright lights and the pressure of the big bucks.

Very great, could have been better

This is a great book to get you motivated to take more interesting landscapes/nature photos. It's strong on composition ideas, and organized very nicely. It's not at all heavy on the technical aspects, and it specifically is not meant to be (go to your local library and you can find dozens of books on the technical aspects of photography).

There were a few things that bugged me along the way. First of all, this new edition is 100% digital, whereas the first version was 100% film. This doesn't change that much in regards to photo creativity or composition, but the first version had helpful sections about how to compensate for certain lighting conditions depending on what kind of film you were using. Plus that means 100% of the photos in the first book were film, 100% digital in the second book, and no two are the same. I think it would be worth it to read both and compare photos from both. She constantly mentions in the second edition how easy digital manipulation is, so I'll bet that changed her approach when she was actually in the field.

For all of her example photos, she lists the size of her lens, the focal length at which she used it, shutter speed, and aperture. No ISO. Again, this is not meant to be a technical book, but I could see a newbie trying to match her settings to the best of their knowledge, getting bad results, and becoming discouraged. I also mention this because she wrote down her film speed for every shot in the first edition. And I hate to say it, but she claims to use a six thousand dollar Canon DSLR throughout this book, and there's a very real advantage as far as way higher, way cleaner ISOs being at your disposal when you're in the field shooting at very small apertures.

Sometimes she'll tell a really great, detailed story about how she figured out something in the field or how something fell into place for a truly memorable photo, and the photos on that page are of completely unrelated situations, so you can't see what she's even talking about. Though most of the time, she does include quality photographs related to the subject about which she's writing.

The last thing that bothered me was the typos. I can't say there's a lot of them but there's a half dozen very obvious ones that take away from the book. The "wondeorful" plug-ins she uses in Photoshop (pg. 127) and getting feedback "fr/om" your viewer (pg. 19) distract from the purty, purty picture on the opposite page. But that's just me.

Overall this is a very great book, full of very great photos. This is THE book to get once you've read up on shutter speed, aperture, and all the other boring technical bits. I've never read something about depth of field in a technical book and wanted to go out shooting, but I'll read one page in this book about diagonal lines, complementary colors, or the different qualities of light and I'll instantly be tempted to grab my camera and go out shooting.

Wisdom for photographers of Any skill level

A Buddhist proverb says, "when the student is ready, a teacher will appear." Brenda Tharp may be that teacher for this mediocre photography student. I've had her book for a while, and I find myself returning to it again and again, often with an "OH! That's what she Meant." This is not a "how to" book, it's far more useful than that. Rather, this slim volume challenges you think about using photography to express ideas, vision, interests beyond pretty pictures that simply record a place or time. Tharp provides the minimum technical details along with her photographs, but the emphasis is on creating images that convey to the viewer what the shooter intended---and, for the shooter to think about what they are trying to say. The book is a treasure for photographers of Any skill level but is aimed at those with dSLRs. Whether youre moving up from point `n shoots or have a large collection of lenses and bodies, much wisdom can be found here---if you're willing to do the necessary work.

a lot of "what" but little "how"

I read this book following Ken Rockwell's recommendation on his website. He writes that Brenda Tharpe's book "cover[s] everything you need to know, like seeing light, shadow, balance, composition, color, interpretation, texture, and everything that matters". Yes, the importance of these variables are mentioned. What is lacking in Tharpe's explanations is how to conceptualize and realize your objective. She states several times the need to experiment, practice, and become accustomed to using your equipment. Omitting the process from visual concept to physical photograph is fine, I suppose, because many references dwell upon technical procedures. What Tharpe crucially lacks is how to crystallize one's creative ambitions into a compelling visual concept; that is, the step before taking the picture. This initial step is essential in a book with the word "creative" in its title.

The book reads like a one-person photo exhibit of rather eclectic subjects and techniques, where the photographer cheerfully comments on each picture. "I waited several hours for the orca to breach", "See how I captured the dominance of the Golden Gate bridge" ... Being an artisan does not necessarily make one a teacher.

Tharpe mentions "style" in her book, and an admonition she received many years ago that her work was merely postcard material devoid of her presence. I closed the book (it took only 3 hours to read) with a puzzling aftertaste: What _is_ Tharpe's style? If anything, her photos are nice postcards, calendars, tourism brochures, and stock photo material. Which are qualities I admire. Her technique and perseverance are present, but her character is not. Perhaps a self-critique of her own style and an introspective analysis of how she developed it might help readers transition from stirring emotions to visual concepts.

Right On!

This book is very informative and "right on the money". It is in alignment with the word of God. It has helped me interpret my own dreams by giving me somewhere to start. By looking up each word in the dream; it has given me a feel for what God is trying to tell to me. Every detail in a dream has meaning. The person having the dream is the only one who can truly know if the revelation speaks to them or not. Sometimes God needs to warn us in order to prevent us from many things that could hinder our walk with him or even to protect us in many ways.(1Cor 15:46) A lot of times he likes to encourage us. Whatever the dream or vision, you can be sure that the Lord your God loves you enough to speak to you in this way. Consider what he is saying; for he will give you understanding in everything.(2Tim 2:7, 1Cor 2:10) Not all dreams are from God. Satan is a Jack of all trades but master of none! He will try to distort the things of God but, he can only mock the Lord. God will not wake you up with fear or tell you something leaving you feeling condemned. Dreams from the devil will be foggy sometimes. If Satan is tormenting you or someone you know; take dominion over your mind and ask Jesus to take every thought captive and that you have the mind of Christ.(Phil 4:7, 2Cor 10:5, 1Cor 2:16) Pray and ask God if there are any open doors (that the devil is coming in) that need to be closed.

A tool for the dreamer.....

I am always on the look out for books like this one. I have been having dreams of all kinds since I was a small child but learning to "interpret" them has always been scary since most books written are from a secular and/or pagan perspective....which can sometimes be a gateway into a spiritual realm that I care not to enter. So, let me simplify this a bit by giving you the pros and cons about this book:

Cons: Sometimes I feel like the authors approach certain subjects with an unnecessary air of controversy. I was sometimes distracted by the shock of a statement only to continue reading and find out I agreed with them....at least most of the time. This kind of approach may be needed for some people, but I found it distracting. I also wish that there was a little more time spent on the how-to of recording dreams and identifying the "theme" of a dream. (Especially since the authors have extensive experience with this gift.) ....but then, I am an extreme detail person, always wanting thorough explanation of such concepts and you may feel their approach is perfect.

Pros: That being said, what I really appreciate about this book is the authors' many references to the absolute necessity of knowing the Word of God BEFORE ever trying to interpret a dream, how key it is that the concepts of any interpretation MUST coincide with Scripture if it can be given any weight at all, and how learning these skills is, first and foremost, an exercise in discerning the voice of the Holy Spirit. I also love their simple presentation of the dream symbol dictionary. I love that they give the Scripture references that led them to most of the interpretations of the symbols. (Although I do wish they had included the "names and places" portion in the main dictionary for those of us using this tool on an eReader or tablet.)

All in all, this is a wonderful tool for the "seer" or "dreamer" who is keenly aware that dreams are more than just something that keeps our minds busy during the night. I am thrilled to add it to my library. I think it's a worthy addition and decently easy to read. I was challenged on many levels and blessed. I look forward to using this tool as I seek a greater understanding of this gift I have enjoyed throughout my life.

Wonder Book

I loved this book. It was so easy to use the reference guide in the back of the book. I love that the reference guide was updated for modern use. I impressed that I could find out the meaning of a cell phone as well as a mop. The reference guide is the best I've found.
