Necessary!

Two new workers at my barn are Mexican. One speaks a little English and the other speaks none. Most of the other workers and boarders only speak English and those that speak Spanish (like me) only speak a little bit. I bought this book and brought it to the barn. Within five minutes the Mexican workers tried to buy it off me - so I am ordering them two more. That's why this book gets five stars from me, it is just a helpful thing to have around and can help you avoid miscommunications.

Not Racist--Necessary

Anyone who has horses and runs a barn and employs Mexican laborer, helpers, whatever terminology you want...NEEDS THIS BOOK. This book is great, it not only makes communication possible about every deal of horses and equipment, it gives confidence to the Mexican workers, which in turn gives them encouragement to learn more English, and to communicate more. They live in our country invisibly mostly, many are illegalls with forged documents, and they live in fear, lonley, and top that off with not being able to communicate, their lives are very sad and sometimes desperate.Desperate people do desperate things. To facilitate the simple act of communicating can forge strong bonds, friendships, loyalty and honesty. I credit Belknap's book with doing just this with 3 Mexcian men who have worked for me and.I went from the American gringa to the American amiga, and suddenly tools, eqipment and etc., stopped "disappearing" from my barn, and the work improved greatly because the men felt repsected and had the self-confidence to ask for what they needed, and upon learning, their self-confident went way up and the barn is a much happier place. I would recommend this book to everyone who has Spanish-speaking help in barns and stables, and this is why I'm now ordering more copies! This book is definitely not racist...I think the reviewer who accused Belknap of being racist is loco.

If you have spanish speaking help at your barn and your spanish is non-existent or rusty,buy this book! It is well organized and concise.The illustrations,though small,are well done and helpful. Because this book pertains to horses and their care,it contains words and references you won't find in other dictionaries.Our barn aides are equally happy with this book.What a relief to be able to finally have needs and questions understood by both parties.Thank you Maria Belknap,my horse thanks you too.

About the Author

Matt Rota is a New York artist who currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts graduate visual narrative program, and has taught in the illustration department at the Maryland Institute College of Art. His drawings and prints have been exhibited at the National Arts Club, the Society of Illustrators, and Last Rites Gallery in New York; the Copro Gallery in Lost Angeles; Galerie L'Oeil du Prince in Paris; and other international locations. He has received recognition and awards from American Illustration, Communication Arts, 3x3 magazine, Creative Quarterly, Spectrum, and Lurzers Intl Archive, where he was listed as one of the top 200 illustrators worldwide. Matt Rota is the author of Rockport's The Art of Ballpoint.

Inspiring book on ballpoint art

I'm in awe at what some of them have created. It's like these artists have turned the ballpoint pen into some sort of fine art tool. The chapters cover classical drawing, modern abstraction, graphic illustration, contemporary realism and sketchbook styles.

There are some artworks that made me do a double take. Like is that created by coloured pencil or ballpoint pen? The techniques of the artists are fantastic. Portrait drawings or landscape sketches are drawn as if with pencils until you read the caption to see that everything's with ballpoint ink. I'm surprised that there are so many colours available for the pens.

Matt Rota's the author of this book and he's also a skilful artist himself. He has included the history of ballpoint pens, profiles and analysis of contributing artists and their work, and also wrote several tutorials in this book. The book's not just inspiring, it also teaches.

This is a fantastic book. It will show you the possibilities of the humble ballpoint pen.

Amazing artists and techniques !!!!!!

The Art of Ballpoint was a great reference book for some of the best artists working in this medium (some of the portraits in this book are mind-blowing). And for anyone who wants to try and do a little bit more with the pens lying around their house themselves, Matt Rota has designed a very clear instructional method with examples and exercises to walk you through the basics.
I typically work with digital drawing programs, but this reminded me of how beautiful ink on paper can be, and inspired me to do more sketching. I was really surprised by the possibilities, and the artists in this book are selected in a particular way to demonstrate the pen’s full range.
This is also a good introduction to Rota, an amazing artist himself, who keeps the book alive with a website, Facebook and Instagram, where he shares more artists and reference material. Definitely recommend this!

A Unique Book!

This book is a rare resource focused exclusively on artworks made using ball point pen.
I've never seen anything covering this subject matter before. Ballpoint may seem like a niche medium
but it has an interesting history and many contemporary practitioners are highlighted here.
The author, Matt Rota, is a killer illustrator in his own right and The Art of Ballpoint includes
a half dozen pages of the incredible Mu Pan's artwork along with 20 other talented artists.
The accompanying text gives great insight into their practices as well.

Best casebook for 1L

So, if you're buying this book, it's because you're required to, not because you love reading about Torts. But, good news! It's about as fun as a casebook can be (which is, admittedly, not very). It's well-written, clear, and doesn't hide the ball. Cases are not followed by 15 citations to obscure law review articles (unlike some other casebooks I could mention), but are followed by explanations that highlight the different approaches states take & that explain any confusion contained in the decision. In short, you'll probably find this casebook more approachable than your other casebooks.

A Sneak Peak

A brother, sister, and cousin, faced with the prospect of a boring summer, embark on a three day camping trip in search of buried "treasure." They are haunted by a mysterious visitor who sneaks about their encampment at night with unknown yet no doubt foul intent. What kind of vermin would hurt such innocent children, or is this visitor merely a nocturnal creature of the woods? Undaunted and by day, the three children proceed to uncover the entrance to an abandoned building and inside find a (spoiler) which they hide. Who attempts to steal this plunder right from under their sleeping bags? What is the dark creature who surreptitiously tries to undermine the antagonist? Were the children trespassing? Who will bail them out? What do the police do? Summer vacation will never be the same after reading, Vacances Dans La Tourmente. A story written for young readers, but nevertheless good reading even for adults trying to brush up on their French.

Exciting story for anyone studying French

This mystery by Marc Thil is written for young French readers from 8-12 years old. While that is his target audience, Vacances Dan tourmante is, like his other books, ideal for students of any age studying French.
Firstly, the stories are well written and are exciting with many plot twists and are not at all predictable. They are not written, as are so many readers designed for non-native learners, with the idea of cramming one with vocabulary or illustrating grammatical points. That makes them flow smoothly and are read to be enjoyed.
The author uses good standard colloquial French without employing slang terms and other usages which vary widely from region to region in a global language such as French. Also, even unfamiliar words or idioms can usually be readily deciphered from context. There is also a great deal of natural spoken dialogue without resorting to "Street French" which, in my opinion, is of little value, albeit perhaps interesting, to the vast majority of non-native speakers...Not to mention many pitfalls in its use by the unwary.
Any student from advanced beginner on up can profit greatly from reading Marc Thil's works. I am a very advanced learner with many years of study of French as well as other languages and I enjoy them immensely. They are a very enjoyable way to keep in practice and are invaluable for those such as myself who are rarely exposed to a native French environment.

Excellant book series for intermidiate french

This is a very good book for our french class. I was reading this series of books myself, when our french instructor noticed them. He picked the book up and had me order several for the entire class. This book is now the third in the series by Marc Thil that our class has read. We are an intermediate level class. These books are written at about the 12 year old leval, so they are perfect for us. Everyone in class has said that they have learned more from these books than all the other french books that we have used.

Nous sommes une classe de niveau interm�diaire. Ces livres sont �crits au sujet de l'ancien leval de 12 ans, donc ils sont parfaits pour nous.
