Freshman Life

College life is so different from high school. It can be better or worse, depending on how you look at it, if you are away from home while experiencing the beginning of your adult life. Seven, the main character, in Ni-Ni Simone's Upgrade U, can say it is a little bit of both. What she imagined for the next stage of her life is not exactly what came to be. In fact, she began to learn more about herself than she had in her 17 plus years during her first year at Stiles U.
Seven, along with her best friend, Shae, transferred to Stiles U from Spellman. Shae wanted to experience college life with Seven. On their first day in the dorms, they meet Khya, their new roommate. She is the life of any party, even when there is nothing happening at that very moment. For Seven life could not get any better, especially since she has her boyfriend, Josiah, already one year into college with his basketball career. They had been together since high school; however, high school relationships do not always continue into college life. Of the ones that do they do not always make it through the four years. Where does Seven and Josiah's relationship stand? Will the change of scenery affect their closeness and feelings for one another or will it make it stronger than ever?
Often, a sense of believability gets lost in books intended for young adults. That was not the case with Upgrade U. The edginess of this book brought a raw emotion and realness that would make it easy for readers to identify with the characters portrayed. Kudos to Ni-Ni Simone for a fantastic job with this work! I found out after I finished reading Upgrade U that this book is part of a series. If that is the case, I do not feel as though I missed anything at all. This could easily be a stand alone book; however, it did make me want to seek out the previous books in the series. I recommend Upgrade U to readers of YA books.

Seven McKnight is embarking on a new journey in her spectacular life of drama...college. Seven and Shae are roomies and become acquainted with their new roomie, Khya, a New Orleans' native and the three become inseparable. Add the flamboyant Courtney with his over the top personality, out of this world garb, and in your face honesty and you know you're in for a fantabolous ride!!! Big Country is rocking the mic on campus, Josiah's skill have increased his ego...so there's new chicks, new flicks, and that New Orleans spice to heighten the experience to college life!
Ni-Ni Simone brings us up to speed with Seven McKnight as her saga continues with even more boisterous humor. The storyline is an exemplary depiction of today's youth wanting to be adults while also allowing their innocence to shine through. Great interactive scenes in regards to realistic teenage relationships versus their actions and reactions. I also loved that the author tackled such a humongous tragedy and did a magnificent job in portraying the travesty endured by a Katrina Survivor through a child's eyes. Addressing issues with housing for these heroes and sheroes, the after effects of death, grief, and life after disaster. Summing it all up, we see hope, heartbreak, relationships dissolve as well as rebuilt, growth, romance, humor, and love. Ni-Ni Simone Rocks!!! MOS DEF!!! 4.75
