That Freak Kid, by Samantha Stemler

An honest and real re-telling of the adolescent struggle: blindly trying to understand the world, the people in it, our own place in it and ourselves whilst still trying to make as few insane, idiotic decisions as possible. This coming-of-age tale spliced with a tumultuous romance is told for young adults by a young adult. Though young readers particularly will love this book because it illustrates the problems, emotions and decisions taken directly out of their own world, others outside this demographic will enjoy this book because, though we may age, we perpetually long for the same things we search for as teens: love and acceptance.

Wonderful YA read
By Cristiann
Oh, wow! I really didn't expect to love and enjoy this book as much as I did. Most books priced this low usually end up disappointing me. And I have a hard time finding books about goth kids where they aren't portrayed in a stereotypical or cliche way. But "That Freak Kid" did not let me down--- it surpried me and left me feeling hopeful and satisfied.

GOOD POINTS:
1. Wonderful characters. I could relate and connect with both Amy and Jack in different ways. They felt real to me through out the whole story.
2. Very good plot and character development. Amy and Jack are interesting and likable people but they are not perfect. They are flawed and at times make midtakes (some that have conseqences) but that's why I love them. The pacing was very good too imo. I didn't see a lot of things coming before they happened.
3. Great love story envolving two teengers. These kids slowly got know each other--- from strangers to friends to later becoming best friends--- until they eventually fell in love in a realistic way. Like most people (especially when we're young) we are shy and unsure of how to properly express our feelings and emotions. Amy and Jack care very deeply for each other, and they show it by always being there for each other, but for a while they each feel that their love is unrequited. Its a very beautiful and powerful moment when they finally confess how they feel. I loved all their sweet moments together--- from them bonding over music to all the kisses and the conversation--- the angsty and heartbreaking moments were good to read as well. I was rooting for them all the way and hopes things would work out for them in the end.
4. Takes a realistic look at how life for teens in puplic schools is like. This is the way it really is, people. This book shows/reminds us how cruel high school and middle school can be. It shows how ignorant so many people are--- from stupid bullies to closed minded teachers and negletful parents. These are problems that many teens struggle with on a daily basis. I felt so bad for Amy … her family was just awful. And the amount of harassment that Jack constantly had to put up with was appalling. Being so young and having to deal with all that crap takes its a lot of a person.
5. Ends with a realistic yet hopeful and happy ending. Its not all sunshine and rainbows--- there are still problems to be solved and consequences to certain actions--- but as long as Jack and Amy (and their other friends) stick together I feel they make it.

BAD POINTS:
1. I noticed there were a few grammatical errors. Nothing too obvious and it didn't happen all the time … but yes, the book needs a bit more editing. I also got a little tired of often reading words like "countenance" and "askance", etcs. I'm sorry but those aren't words people (especially teens) think of or use often. It just seemed to me that the author was trying to come across as overly intellectual.
2. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Marilyn Manson. While I do enjoy his cover of Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), I can't say I'm all that familiar with him or his music atm. However, I'm pretty sure MM is a singer--- not a band. It was interesting to read about but at times the information shared here about MM didn't seem 100% accurate to me. Also, MM seems like something goth kids would've been into in the 90s or early 2000s, but not so much these days. I don't know, just my opinion. I would have liked to read more about Jack and Amy's other tastes in music too.
3. Not enough Jack POV. Yes, we got interesting flashbacks and some insight from him on present day moments, but I guess I wanted a little more. I would have liked to read about what he was thinking during the early parts of the book too.

All in all its a great stab at the YA contemporary genre. Its got lots of heart and soul … definitely worth your time. I highly recommend it! :)

Amazing
By eMoJi
I felt many different emotions while reading this book...I loved every second of it,and I felt everything the characters did. not many people can say that about a book,it has to be really good. This book is really good. I cried, laughed my ass off, yelled, and even just sat staring at the pages for 5 minutes just to do it because i simply love the book. I really do wish a second book would come along with this one. I hate to be done with it, now I have nothing to do with my life. I would usually find another book but nothing cool beat this book. I am actually pretty gothic/emo/punk myself and I went through a lot of the same things the characters did. Even loosing close friends to suicide. I just loved the book and I would consider buying it, it would be stupid not to!

I love it!
By MissMisha
I was a bit skeptical in buying it because I thought "only a bad book would be priced this low," but I was wrong. When I first started reading this book, it was very hard for me to put away. And though I don't listen to Manson's music, it was interesting to read about. I really felt like I could relate to both Amy and Jack in different ways, I thought their character development was excellent.

There were some errors I caught throughout the book (mostly grammatical), but overall I thought that it was a good story with plot twists I wasn't really expecting (like Amy's family situation). If I had the time, I probably would've been finished with this book in a day!
