Dick Hess�has a Ph.D. in physics from UC Berkeley. He worked for Logicon, Inc., for 27 years as a solver of technical and management problems in the field of aerospace.

A great set of 123 new puzzles

Dick Hess is well known in the puzzling world for analyzing puzzle variants. At just about every puzzle convention, he'd give away small puzzle booklets that completely explored variants of some well-known puzzles. Many puzzle collectors started begging Dick to publish a puzzle book. He always was able to find new twists that no-one had thought of before.
All-Star Mathlete Puzzles was his first collection, and it's great. When I noticed this new collection by Dick Hess, I ordered it immediately.
Some samples:
A bridge partnership made game on an undoubled hand. It was noticed that each of the four deuces took a trick. What was their contract and how could it have happened? Imperfect bidding and play are allowed.
Make 29 with: 1, 1, 2. Or make 29 with 0, 5, 7. Or make 67 with 8, 9, 9.
Without using 0, place 16 digits in a 4x4 grid so that each of the four rows and columns is a 4 digit square.
A great collection of new puzzles. Recommended.

I was both disappointed and entertained by this book

I was both disappointed and entertained by this book. Some of the problems were fun to solve while others appeared to be 'Mathematical Puzzles' but they were really just play on words that were not very clever and turned out to be a waste of time. I would try and read into the problem but would be left with an unsatisfied answer.
